Newlands
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden

Why this place
Kirstenbosch is a generous garden to explore slowly, with the eastern slopes of Table Mountain rising behind it. Look closely at the plants as well as the view: the garden is devoted to southern African flora, and the proteas and tree-canopy walkway offer very different ways of seeing it. It works especially well as a quieter day between a city walk and a longer coastal trip.
Bring comfortable walking shoes and a picnic blanket if you want to settle on the lawns. Pack your own halal picnic, water and a light layer for shade or changing weather. Choose your route around the energy and mobility of your group; a garden visit need not become a hike. Confirm access to individual paths and the walkway on arrival.
