Ferry from the Waterfront
Robben Island

Why this place
Robben Island connects several periods of imprisonment in the Cape’s history. Tuan Guru’s confinement and his writing of the Qur’an belong to an earlier chapter than the imprisonment of Nelson Mandela, but both make the crossing more than a harbour excursion. Reading a little before you travel helps you connect the island’s places with the lives shaped there.
Book through the official museum and read the ticket’s check-in and identification requirements carefully. Bring a layer for the crossing and consider your own comfort at sea. Sailings depend on conditions, so leave room in your plans for a cancellation. The kramat is associated with the organised route; do not assume you can leave the tour to visit independently.
