Ferry from the Waterfront
Where Tuan Guru wrote out the Qur'an from memory and where Mandela spent eighteen years. The tour bus passes the shrine of Sayed Abdurahman Motura and the guide points it out. Book well ahead; sailings depend on the sea.
Opening: Daily departures at 9am, 11am, 1pm and, in peak season September to April, 3pm.
Signal Hill Road
Free, and the best sunset in the city. The Noon Gun fires at twelve, Monday to Saturday. Four kramats sit on the hill, the start of the circle that rings the peninsula.

39 Dorp Street, Bo-Kaap
The first mosque in South Africa, praying since 1794 with Tuan Guru's handwritten Qur'an still kept inside. Come for salah; there are no tours, and the welcome is real.

71 Wale Street, Bo-Kaap
A small Iziko house museum on Wale Street, furnished as a nineteenth-century Cape Muslim home. An hour that makes the whole neighbourhood make sense.
Opening: Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm; Saturday until 4pm. Sunday is not listed as a regular opening day.
Top of Longmarket Street, Bo-Kaap
The oldest Muslim burial ground in the country, on the slope above Bo-Kaap. Tuan Guru and Abu Bakr Effendi lie here. Plan around the limited weekend visiting window or enquire about special access.
Opening: Usually Saturday and Sunday, noon to 2pm only.
25A Buitenkant Street
The story of 60,000 people removed from their homes, told by the people themselves. Book ahead; the guided walk with a former resident is the one to take.
Opening: Monday to Saturday 9am to 4pm.
Castle Street, city centre
The oldest colonial building in the country, where the Dutch East India Company governed and where the first exiles were brought ashore. Cheap, central, and quiet in the morning.
Opening: Daily 9am to 5pm.
Kramat Road, Faure
The shrine of the scholar who arrived in 1694, on a hill above Macassar forty kilometres from town. Open to all, quiet on weekdays, easiest by car or with us.

Meet at Auwal Masjid, Bo-Kaap
Walk through Bo-Kaap with a local guide, beginning at Auwal Masjid and connecting the streets with the community’s history. Any visit inside Tana Baru depends on confirmed access.
Opening: Departures: Tuesday 27 October 2026 and Tuesday 3 November 2026, 10.30am to 1pm, from Auwal Masjid.

An afternoon with Shafiq Morton, from Bo-Kaap to Signal Hill, the Mowbray cemetery and the Constantia kramats, and back.
